Presentations and training

I’ve spoken to at least a hundred groups about scientific writing and publishing, for a simple reason: I really enjoy it. Most of the time, I was training researchers in a wide range of scientific publishing topics, but I’ve also often presented many short, tailored sessions in collaboration with individual clients.

I’ve presented to audiences around the world (especially China and Europe), both in person and online, to researchers of all levels, in most scientific fields, at both academic and commercial organizations.

I have over a decade of experience in science communication and publishing to draw from, including working as a professional editor at Nature, editing many hundreds of research papers, grant applications, and review papers, and setting publishing policies and processes in a Chief Editor capacity.

I am available to talk to your group or organization. Let’s discuss what your researchers would benefit most from.

Here’s what you get:

  • Scientific writing is full of challenges. Would your researchers benefit from help with finding the right level of detail when writing? Making the most of the Discussion section? Emphasizing their own abilities within their grant applications? Choosing a journal? Let me know, and I can speak to those challenges directly.

  • I might not be able to perform the research itself, but I’ve been immersed in research my whole career, not least during my PhD. I know that between formulating a hypothesis and publicizing your findings, you can expect a few surprises. I also know how busy researchers are, and how time-consuming writing can be.

My pragmatic approach to teaching can help smooth the journey your researchers take to communicating their work. Above all, I listen.

  • I like presentations and training to be a two-way street. I want to find out what really bothers or interests my audience, sometimes adapting on the fly to exceed their expectations.

For small groups, there’s also the option of the participants doing some homework, so that I can adapt the presentation material or even provide individual feedback, or for me to provide more intensive manuscript consultation sessions after the training.

  • My usual format is online. I’ve presented scores of webinars and training sessions online and know how to use technology to improve the experience.

Meanwhile, I’m very keen to visit organizations local to my base in Fort Collins, Colorado.

I limit my flying for environmental reasons, but may be able to visit more distant locations, so please ask.

Presentations

I talk to your research group, department, or institution about a topic in scientific writing and publishing (agreed in advance). Often these presentations amount to an informal training session.

The usual format is online. However, if you’re local to Northern Colorado, I can visit you instead.

Interactive training workshops

Practice-focused writing training workshops that are heavily tailored to your researchers’ needs. Let’s talk about the challenges you want to solve.

I can cover topics as diverse as achieving impact in the Discussion session, staying on topic, overcoming writer’s block, practical and ethical uses of generative AI in the writing process, and the future of scientific publishing.
