Content support
My editing and advice go to the heart of how your ideas are communicated.
Most scientific editing services and editors focus on language, sometimes with sporadic feedback on content. But your readers aren’t reading for the language – content is key. As long as the language is fully understandable, readers want to focus on your argumentation and information.
Here you can obtain expert content support that focuses mostly on those two things, as efficiently and effectively as possible. This makes my services equally suitable for both native and non-native English speakers.
As with my other services, I can work on journal articles (with or without cover letters and/or a response to reviewers), grant applications, review articles, and essentially any other common scientific communication formats.
I can also write for you! I offer manuscript- and article-writing services to organizations, and sometimes to individual researchers. For writing services, please contact me here.
I provide support that helps you:
-
Identify the key points of interest, and use structure, argumentation and objective but emphatic phrasing to draw attention to them.
-
Identify the people who will benefit from the key points, and tailor everything around those people.
-
Provide the details and the logical points that will enable your readers and reviewers to truly understand your work. In addressing this point, I indicate any obvious issues with the presentation of literature context, and your aims and how they relate to your main argument, for example.
-
For papers/grants, develop a thorough, logical, objective, and compelling case for your work.
Note that I do not provide peer review. See the FAQs for more details.
-
Editing throughout your documents to ensure that they generally read well, particularly focusing on key statements. (I do not typically provide a full language edit, see FAQs.)
-
Content editing
I work on your document to make it more effective. My edits directly address key issues as far as possible, with comments to suggest how you can tackle any areas of uncertainty.
I tend to focus mostly on scientific argumentation, logic, narrative, and clarity. See FAQs for details of how I cover language.
On completion, you’ll receive an edited and commented version of your Microsoft Word documents.

Written consultations
This is often the most efficient way to gain feedback on a piece of work.
I’ll examine your submission and your requests, and then create a 2- to 4-page prioritized roadmap for revision. I often focus heavily on logic, such as gaps in your argument.
If you’d also like to receive content editing, please request this when you submit.

Live consultations
This powerful service is all about you and your questions. It allows you to talk with me in great detail about your document, in an hour-long session
It’s similar to a written consultation, but instead of me writing my feedback, we discuss it.
It’s open both to individual writers and to small author groups, and is typically conducted online (but I can often visit local authors).
